INFORMATION
Hlengiwe Ntombela, widely known by her stage name HLE, is a South African gospel singer, songwriter, worship leader, music director, and television personality whose voice and ministry have made her one of the leading figures in contemporary African gospel music. Born on April 12, 1991, in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, she grew up as the daughter of a pastor, which deeply influenced her spiritual foundation and early involvement in church music.
HLE’s musical journey began as a backing vocalist for renowned South African gospel artist Ntokozo Mbambo, and her talent quickly drew attention. In 2012 she was invited to lead a song with the iconic Joyous Celebration gospel choir after one of its lead vocalists was unavailable, and this opportunity led to her becoming a full member of the group. Her time with Joyous Celebration allowed her to perform on major stages, refine her vocal and leadership skills, and connect with a wide gospel audience across South Africa and beyond.
After several years with the choir, HLE embarked on a solo career that showcased her distinct voice and artistic vision. In 2019 she recorded her debut project Your Kingdom on Earth (YKOE), a live album that introduced her as a solo artist and reflected her heart for worship and declaration through music. The following year she released her debut solo single “Dwala,” which debuted at number one on the iTunes charts and helped solidify her status as a leading gospel voice in the region. Around the same time she launched The HOW Project, an initiative focused on cultivating the heart of worship in listeners and believers.

In addition to her recordings, HLE expanded her ministry into television, hosting weekly shows such as “Adlib” and VIP Invite on South Africa’s One Gospel channel, where she featured and celebrated fellow gospel artists and worship leaders. These platforms helped her reach a broader audience and contributed to her reputation as both a musical artist and cultural influencer within the gospel community.
HLE’s impact continued to grow globally when, in 2022, she signed an exclusive recording deal with Motown Gospel, a division of Capitol Christian Music Group, becoming the first South African artist to enter into a direct global partnership with the prestigious label. This move marked a significant step in extending her music and ministry into the United States and international Christian markets, highlighting her global potential and reach.
Her work blends contemporary worship, African gospel, jazz, and soul influences, often integrating English and indigenous languages to create music that carries both cultural richness and spiritual depth. Songs such as “You Are,” “Living Hope,” and others from her projects have resonated widely with worshipers, contributing to her reputation as a cross-generational gospel artist.
Over time, HLE has not only maintained her recording career but also taken on mentorship roles, guiding emerging female artists in performance, stage presence, and artistry through initiatives like Voices of Her, demonstrating her commitment to empowering the next generation in gospel music.
Through her musical releases, television presence, international collaborations, and mentoring efforts, HLE continues to be a dynamic force in gospel music — one whose ministry transcends borders while inspiring believers worldwide through worship, authenticity, and artistic excellence.
