INFORMATION
Hillsong United is an Australian Christian worship band that originated in 1998 in Sydney, Australia. The group began as part of the youth ministry of Hillsong Church. It grew out of the church’s youth group called Powerhouse, where young musicians and worship leaders came together to lead worship during youth services and conferences. The band was originally known as United Live and was formed to create worship music that connected with young people and helped them express their faith.
In the early years, the group was led by worship leaders such as Reuben Morgan, and later by Joel Houston and Marty Sampson. Their music quickly gained attention within Christian communities, especially through youth gatherings organized by Hillsong Church. In 1999, the band released its first album, Everyday, which marked the beginning of a series of worship albums recorded mostly during live church events and conferences.

Over time, Hillsong United became internationally recognized in the contemporary Christian music scene. Albums such as All of the Above (2007), Zion (2013), Empires (2015), and Wonder (2017) helped expand their global influence. One of their most famous songs, Oceans (Where Feet May Fail), became a worldwide worship anthem and stayed at the top of Christian music charts for a long time, being sung in churches across many countries.
The band’s music blends contemporary worship with elements of rock, pop, and electronic styles. Unlike many traditional bands, Hillsong United does not have a permanently fixed lineup; instead, it includes different singers and musicians from Hillsong Church who contribute to songwriting and performances. Some well-known members include Taya Smith, Matt Crocker, and Brooke Fraser.
Today, Hillsong United is considered one of the most influential modern worship bands in the world. Their songs are sung in churches globally and have been translated into many languages. Through their music and international tours, they continue to inspire millions of Christians and play a major role in shaping contemporary worship music.
